Anders wanted to get shot. In the exchange with the bank robbers, he deliberately antagonizes one of them to the point of action, something that the robber seems reluctant to do. There seems to be alot of support for this position, particularly in the things that Anders doesn't remember, though there is some evidence is his initial exchange with the woman.
Particularly, Anders agrees with the woman in principle, but then is compelled to chew her out because of her choice of words. As a literary critic (which is a fascinating choice in itself) we can safely assume he educated. However, he specifically chooses to use sloppy logic to intellectually bully the woman in line. And to what end? It seems like he simply wants her to be as miserable as he is.
In the things Anders doesn't remember, the majority of the experiences (especially negative) have to do with women. While Anders seem particularly frustrated with life (he hated the writers for writing books, for example) he seems to have a particular animosity towards women. Demonstrating some classic madonna-whore complex symptoms, coupled with his inherit romanticism (remember the poetry?) pouts him in a position where he'll never be satisfied. So he takes the easy way out.
